Each year, umpires need to attend at least one umpire class provided by MYAS, the cost is about $30.00. These classes run from end of March through mid June. At the class, umpires will rotate between stations covering plate mechanics, the one-man umpire system, rules and game management.

Umpires must pass the free online Concussion training class before being scheduled any games as mandated by the state of Minnesota. The class can be assessed by going to www.nfhslearn.com. The course requires registration but is free and the certificate is good for 3 years.

Umpires aged 17 and older are required to pay for a background check ($15) which is good for two years and available through MYAS.

EQUIPMENT
Umpires have the option to purchase his/her own equipment (pants, mask, cap, chest protector, clicker, plate brush, ball bag, shin guards, and cup). If you choose not to get your own equipment, BPBA has a limited supply of some equipment on a case by case basis. Pants, cap, and cup are not provided.
