BPAA MINUTES FOR JULY 26, 2005

The meeting was held at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28 at the Brooklyn Park Community Center.   Ed Ampe took meeting minutes.

ATTENDEES:
*  Dan Williams, Jim Huntington, Wayne Heuer, Dave Gulbrandson, John Lundquist, Markus Carter, Jay Lotthammer, Dave Corbett and Ed Ampe.

SECRETARY'S REPORT:
*    M/S/P

TREASURER'S REPORT:
*    The report is balanced through the July statement.
*    Question concerning Air Conditioning bill for baseball concession stand and why was it taken out of baseball's account instead of using concession stand checkbook.  Thought was that concession stand checkbook could be nearly out of checks.
*    M/S/P

SOCCER - John
*    Due to poor grass conditions, unable to play on fields NSP 1 & 2.  This has caused games to be rescheduled.

*    Also forgot to not schedule a game at Noble on August 2.  Have to reschedule due to fireworks.

*    Need check for concessions.

*    Question for Jay about using shed for concession stand.  Jay’s answer was “Yes”.
*    Had a few complaints on rough play.  May change the rules on slide tackling.  Will research to see what other leagues do.

*    Total of 102 teams, 204 coaches, approximately 1400 players.

*    Will hand out ribbons to regular season winners and give coaches a gift at the Coaches dinner.

*    Pictures scheduled for Wed, July 27th at Central park, same night as softball coaches picnic.  Didn’t know that park had to be reserved for pictures.  Softball had reserved the park. Soccer will move pictures down to Central 2 and put up signs to redirect. Will also update web site.

SOFTBALL – Ed/Dave C.
*    Season is completed.

*    Tournament went well except for the heat.  A few players suffered heat stroke and had to be attended to.  Grounds crew did a fantastic job both Saturday and Sunday.  They watered down the fields as needed to keep them soft and the dust down.

*    Softball will be adding some board members for the upcoming season.  We’ve been doing some recruiting to start replacing some of the members that have served many years, but now their daughters are finishing up play.  New concession stand coordinator found.
*    Coaches’ Picnic and softball game will be Wednesday night (July 27) at Central Park.  Facility was reserved with city.

*    Sam’s Club membership was purchased for Softball, but is listed as BPAA.  Only one name is currently on it, but others can be added for a price.

FOOTBALL - Markus
*    Next registration is 7-9pm on Wednesday July 27th.
*    Registration prior to school being out was slow.

BASKETBALL - Jim
*    Working on getting flyers printed and handed out the first week of school and at the open houses.
*    Trying to avoid late registrations.

BASEBALL - Wayne
*    Regular season is done.  Rec State tournament will be August 6-7.
*    Baseball's tournament was held July 15/16/17.  27 non-Brooklyn Park teams attended.  Used Noble fields

*    There were several coaches issues.  One coach was suspended and had a big blowup.  Contemplating further action.  This is the second occurrence for this coach.  This was an assistant coach.  Another assistant coach feels that he shouldn’t be allowed to coach next year.  Several parents also came up afterwards.

*    Just before July 4 coach grabbed a player’s jersey.  Kid was crying after coming back from the bathroom.  Baseball is trying to find out exactly what happened.  Seems like the coach was just trying to get the player’s attention.  Coach has written a statement of apology to team and parents.  Parents are still upset and are going before the board.
*    Dan will create a list of problem coaches and send it out to all sports.  Each sport will be responsible for updating the list.  BPAA needs to make a rule that if you are not allowed to coach in one sport, you won’t be allowed to coach in any of BPAA’s sports.
*    New person to take over concession stand, John Beal, is taking over for Lee.
*    Year end picnic will be held at Northwoods on Sunday July 30th.  This picnic includes all coaches and players.

CITY - Jay
*    Storage shed bids approved on Monday night.  Next step is to contact winner.  Could get started within 10 days.  Bid came in at $91,000 plus architect fees, electrical and dirt.
*    The bid did include interior of building.
*    There were a couple of irrigation problems this year with some of the fields (Central #2 and Zane baseball fields).
*    Noble Soccer fields #1 and #2 are closed.  A few games in August may be allowed, but will be closed again in September.
*    If you want info in the next brochure, get information into Jay.

*    New marquee is up.  Doesn’t seem as easy to read as old.  Perhaps something can be done with the lettering.

MISC -
*    Fee increase to pay for shed.  Basketball did increase their fee for fall 2005.

*    Basketball scholarships are only going to be given out during the first 2 registration dates.  It was suggested to have scholarship players/parents work at tournament in lieu of paying fees.
*    Dan received a letter from the IRS.  BPAA needs more forms filled out.  Jim says we are a 503C corporation.  Dan will call Jim to clarify how BPAA people are paid.

*    Interior of the shed is in the bid.  It would be a good idea to get each sport’s equipment people involved.

*    In the last Parks Pages there was a BPAA ad that said “Fee assistance.  Scholarships available when registering”.  No one is sure who placed this.  We don’t necessarily want to publish this as was done.

Meeting adjourned.  M/S/P
